FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a MUCK?
A MUCK is a multi-user, text based, socially interactive, user-extendable role playing environment. Another way of looking at it is as a living book, of sorts. You connect with a client and interact with others, writing a new story as you go along. See the TinyMUCK entry on Wikipedia for more information.
What is a character?
A character is the username you use to connect to the MUCK. The first character you create becomes your primary character and establishes your account. An account can have more than one character assigned to it and the additional characters are called "alternate characters" or "alts" for short.
Can I have a character with a number or special symbol in the name?
No. Special symbols are not allowed because of systematic constraints and numbers are not allowed as a general policy. Just as you wouldn't meet a "John1 Smith" in real life, we don't wish our characters to be numbers, either.
Can I pick any name at all?
No. In order to preserve the theme of the muck, we do reserve the right to reject names that would be blatantly out of place (such as "Joe" or "Bob"). The list below offers several resources from which you can select Swahili words that would make excellent names. If in doubt, please page any on duty wizard or helpstaff member for assistance.

How long does it take for my character request to be approved?
Processing requests is a manual procedure and is only done by the wizards. Our goal is to respond to requests within twenty-four hours, but occasionally that window will be larger. If you have been waiting more than twenty-four hours, feel free to contact a member of the Help Staff on the MUCK or email the administrators to inquire about the status of your request.
Now that I have a character, how do I get started?
Check out Talfasi's excellent MUCK Intro Guide!
How do I change my email address?
Page or MUCKmail a wizard to request the change. Include both old and new email addresses for us to verify your identity against what is on file.
Why do I get disconnected after idling for forty-five minutes?
The MUCK administrators monitor the activity on the MUCK and use connection counts to determine how many users are active at any given moment. Idling needlessly skews our statistics in an undesirable manner, so the idle-boot policy was implemented.
How can I become a Help Staffer?
Page or MUCKMail Jioni and let her know you're interested!
How can I become a Wizard?
Wizards are added on an infrequent basis - usually only when another, existing wizard steps down. As a general rule, we do not accept requests to become a wizard and tend to keep track of those who have actively pursued a wizard bit. This is a policy of Ketekh's and is based on the premise that someone who wants to become a wizard isn't ready to be a wizard.
Why do you accept requests to join Help Staff but not requests to join the Wizard team?
Help Staff are a group of players who are willing and able to offer guidance to other players regarding MUCK-related issues. Wizards are players with a higher level of access to the MUCK and have the ability to perform actions not normally granted to other players(renaming/deleting others' objects, moving rooms/things/players that they do not own, etc) in order to help administer the rules and improve the MUCK. Because of this higher level of access (indeed, it's possible to shut the muck down if you're a wizard, but only Ketekh and Danur have access to restart it!), wizards are more selectively chosen.
